What to Expect When Your Pet Gets Spayed or Neutered
If your pet is scheduled for a spay or neuter surgery, you might feel a little anxious—and that’s completely normal. At AM PM Low Cost Spay Neuter & Vaccine Clinic, we’re here to walk you through every step of the process, so you and your pet can feel prepared and confident.
Before Surgery:
All pets undergo a pre-surgical exam to confirm they’re healthy enough for anesthesia. We also offer optional pre-anesthetic blood work to check organ function and detect any hidden concerns. While this testing is optional, it’s highly recommended—especially for older pets or those with unknown medical histories.
You’ll receive instructions the day before surgery, which usually include withholding food after midnight. Water is typically fine, but always double-check your pre-op guide. Be sure to arrive on time and bring any required paperwork or medications your pet may be taking.
During Surgery:
Our experienced veterinary team uses safe, modern anesthetics and pain management to ensure your pet is as comfortable as possible. Spay and neuter surgeries are routine procedures that typically take 15–30 minutes depending on the pet’s size, age, and sex.
Pets are monitored throughout the procedure and during recovery to ensure a smooth transition from anesthesia.
After Surgery:
You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions when you pick your pet up, including information on limiting activity, checking the incision site, and managing pain. Most pets recover quickly and are back to their normal selves in a few days.
It’s important to prevent licking or chewing at the incision—an e-collar (cone) may be needed for about 10–14 days. Keep your pet calm and indoors while they heal, and contact us if you notice any swelling, redness, or discharge.
